Wrong and wrong. There are natural ways to improve your vision and make those computer and cell phone screens easier to read. You can eat for better eyesight. You can exercise your eyes to strengthen your vision.

And, giving your eyes a “vision spa” can help, too. Dr. Mao Shing Ni, an expert in Chinese medicine and author of Secrets of Longevity, offered his three top recommendations to improve vision naturally, on the Dr. Oz show.

Eat Garlic and Salmon – Eye-friendly Foods. Foods rich in sulfur, cysteine, and lecithin help protect the lens of your eye from cataract formation, says Dr. Ni.  Excellent choices include garlic, onions, shallots, and capers. Ni also recommends a vision-friendly diet high in coldwater fish, such as wild salmon, sardines, mackerel, and cod. Why? Each of these foods is high in DHA. This fatty acid provides structural support to cell membranes and boosts eye health.

Exercise for Your Eyes. Several very simple exercises can help your vision. Ni offers a suggestion for keeping eye floaters at bay: First, warm your eyes. Simply rub your palms together to create heat. Then place them against your eyes for five seconds. Repeat this three times.

Give Your Eyes a Break. Like any muscle, your eyes can get fatigued. Ni advises his patients to rest their eyes 10 minutes for every 50 minutes spent reading, or looking at the computer. If your eyes feel overly spent from reading, give them a spa. Ni suggests lying down and placing cool cucumber slices over your eyelids.
