5 Things You Should Do For a Healthier Morning

 We all have some bad morning habits that we have developed over the years, like jumping out of bed or checking that phone. There are some simple things you can do first thing to set yourself up to feel good all day.

1. Take it slow.
There's not reason to bounce out of bed the moment you open your eyes. In fact, it can be bad for your health. You could tweak your neck or back, or raise your blood pressure to a dangerous level. Instead, pull your knees in to your chest one at a time to warm up your muscles and get your blood flowing. Reach your arms above your head and then to the sides and gently tilt your head from to stretch your neck muscles. When you're ready, sit up and dangle your feet off the side of the bed and take a few deep breaths.

2. Think positive thoughts.
So many of us reach for our phones at first light, scanning the news, emails, or social media. This causes negative emotions and anxiety right out of the gate. Spend the time you usually do on your phone thinking about your day and practicing this gratitude exercise. As you are getting out of bed, think of three things that make you feel grateful. They can be general, like summer mornings, or more specific, like an upcoming trip.  Throughout the morning, as you move through your morning routine, reflect on these things and why they make you happy.

3. Drink a big glass of water.
Health experts agree, this may be the best thing you can do for your body when you first get up. You may have become slightly dehydrated over night, and a glass of water will kick start your metabolism and aid in digestion. It also helps with moving the lower bowels for regularity.

4. Eat breakfast.
Did you know that consuming more calories earlier in the day may reduce your risk of a heart attack, stroke, or other circulatory issues? Even if you aren't super hungry in the AM, try to eat a little protein, like greek yogurt, cottage cheese, or a hard boiled egg. The protein will give you the energy you need to get through until lunch.

5. Exercise.
Even if it's for 10 minutes, get your body moving in the morning. when you start your day with an exercise routine, however brief, it will set you up for healthy choices throughout the day. You'll also burn more calories throughout the day doing the same activities. Plus, if you find you're not really a breakfast person, some exercise will stoke your appetite.
