Good hearing can lead to good health

Good hearing is vital to our everyday lives.  We are able to enjoy our favorite music, movies and conversations with friends and families. With good hearing, we always feel included as we understand what is around us.  What many people don't realize is that good hearing can lead to better overall health.

From your head to your toes, good hearing may lead to a healthier life.  Here are the ways...

1. Your brain can be affected by having poor hearing health.  One study was done that showcased the cognitive function of 253 older men and women.  They were tested over a period of 20 years and it was discovered that those with moderate-to-severe-hearing impairment, had a greater decline in memory and other mental abilities.

2. Depression is terrible disease that afflicts millions of people.   Hearing loss is also associated with depression among American adults, especially women and those younger than the age of 70.  In a recent study, as hearing declined the percentage of depressed adults increased from about 5 percent in those who had no hearing issues to over 11 percent in those who did.

3. One of the more conclusive links that numerous studies have discovered is that older adults with hearing loss are more likely to develop Alzheimer's disease.  Those with mild hearing impairment are nearly twice as likely to develop dementia compared to those with normal hearing. The risk increases three-fold for those with moderate hearing loss, and five-fold for those with severe impairment.
